How do I clean my Tanzite STONEDECK?

To clean grease such as BBQ grease, use a degreaser; even a heavy-duty engine degreaser is safe to use.
To get rid of haze, use standard tile haze remover.
To remove paint, use paint thinner.

Tanzite STONEDECKS can even be scrubbed with a wire brush without damaging your deck. Not too many companies can say that about their products can handle that! Note: Tanzite STONEDECK's non-slip properties can take a bit more effort to clean. Do Tanzite stones become hot in summer?

Answer

Tanzite stones stay cooler than most decking alternatives when exposed to the sun. However, like other decking options, the darker the colour, the more heat it will absorb. Therefore, if this is a concern, then the lighter colours will be the coolest option. No. Although Tanzite stones are man-made, they are vitrified, not cultured. The stone is basically made the same way mother nature would, with an incredible amount of heat and pressure that literally melts it into a perfect stone.

Answer

Wood and stone are both natural products, and as such, their heat absorption is similar if their colour is similar. The darker the colour, the more heat either product will absorb. Unlike wood, Tanzite stones are very dense, which means they will heat up slower than wood.

Yes. Tanzite stones will hold up great in high traffic areas. We recommend applying a sealer every 5 years in medium-traffic commercial areas and every 3 years in high-traffic commercial areas to keep their finish.

Tanzite products are most comparable to composite decks from a pricing perspective; however, they are quite different when it comes to usability. Tanzite is non-slip no matter the weather, it is virtually scratch-proof, and it looks remarkably similar to actual wood while also offering colour and size options that look just like stone! The properties that make each piece so strong and keep it from scratching also create a heat sink effect, which means that unlike plastic-based products, your deck will slowly warm up in the sun and slowly release that warmth once the sun goes down. How is Tanzite better than vinyl?

Answer

Concrete is porous, so if you live in an area with freezing temperatures, any water that gets into the concrete could freeze, expand, and make a crack in the concrete. Concrete is virtually permanent, so any issue that may occur is practically impossible to repair correctly, and it usually requires a full replacement for it to function correctly again. Concrete is also typically much heavier than Tanzite, so extra engineering may be needed for a concrete deck.

Tanzite STONEDECKS are made of natural stone. Therefore they will outlast almost everything on your property while looking as good as new! This is why we recommend using the waterproof membrane and pressure-treated wood, along with proper ventilation on decks lower to the ground. When appropriately built with these 3 components, your deck frame can last anywhere from 30 - 50 years and even longer with the proper upkeep and preventative maintenance! We know most designs change throughout the decades, so if you ever want to change your deck’s layout, you can always remove and re-use the stones. They can be reused on a new deck, patio, walkway, stepping stones, and much more!

Tanzite STONEDECKS can resurface almost any existing, structurally-sound wood deck or landing. If your existing deck is waterproof Tanzite stones can go directly over the top. There are hairline cracks on my concrete pad. Can I still install Tanzite Stones on top of it?

Answer

As long as the surface stays flat, a hairline crack shouldn’t be an issue. The stone tile floats over the surface, so a bit of movement underneath shouldn’t be an issue.

How is Tanzite stone sealed to keep water intrusion from under the stones?

Answer

Tanzite stones have 0% porosity, which means that water intrusion is nonexistent on any side of the stone. However, the jointing sand is not waterproof, and so, some water can get in between the stones. If this happens, the floating stones move and flex with the structure. If water gets between the stone and the membrane, it will freeze and expand, but it will not damage the structure. One of the most important principles behind a Tanzite STONEDECK is its flexibility and ability to adjust to its surroundings instead of rigidity and fighting inevitable shifts and changes. If your surface is not currently sealed, we would suggest purchasing our one-piece EPDM water protection membrane.

How watertight is your membrane?

Answer

The membrane is flexible and stretches easily so it can self seal around the screws. Adding a bit of caulking will make it watertight. This is similar to the railing on most watertight decking systems, such as vinyl, wherein the railing is mounted through the deck surface. Some building codes do not allow screwing through the surface of the deck, not even for railing. To address this, we have developed a fascia mount bullnose edge stone that, similar to fascia mount railing, fastens to the side of the deck frame to avoid screwing through the membrane.

Does the membrane need to be tucked behind the house wrap or just behind the siding?

Answer

The waterproof membrane should not be tucked behind the house wrap. House wrap is used to create an envelope around your house to better control temperature, humidity, airflow, and moisture. Since your deck is not a component of the house’s interior, installing the membrane behind the house wrap would break the envelope changing how your house was meant to function. This is not always the case, however, more specifically regarding rooftop decks. In most cases, you simply want the membrane to tuck behind the siding to force any moisture on the siding to drip down onto the membrane or across the deck’s surface, then run off the edge of the deck to the ground.

What is the purpose of the membrane on Tanzite STONEDECKS?

Answer

To protect the wood of the framing structure to ensure it lasts for as long as possible. We recommend using pressure-treated wood so that if there is a small failure in the water protection offered by the membrane, the wood itself will be resistant to any potential water damage. Tanzanite stones are laid down on top of the membrane and protect it from the elements and other damage. It is a process very similar to flat roofing installation.

Are all Tanzite stones screwed into the frame?

Answer

No. Only the outside edge stones (bullnose stones) are screwed down. The rest of the stones float, so they sit on top and are held in place between the bullnose stones and the house’s wall. Since the stones are 2cm thick, they are structurally sound on their own, and mortar is not necessary or recommended; they are simply held in place by gravity.

Can I drill through the membrane to install the railing? Or do I need a fascia-mounted railing?

Answer

Using a side-mounted railing is generally preferred. If you live in British Columbia, it is actually building code in most areas due to the amount of moisture they receive and the frequency in which decks are built above living spaces. In other provinces, surface-mount railings have been installed on waterproof decks for many decades without short-term issues. If you’re planning on using a surface-mount railing, we recommend caulking the screw/bolt holes before installing them so that they pull the caulking into the hole, avoiding any moisture problems.

Question 29

Will the underside of my deck be waterproof?

Answer

Only if you build the side of the deck (skirting or fascia) to keep moisture to the outside of the space and make sure that the ground is sloping away from the deck in all locations. Depending on your deck’s height, grading and wind can allow water to get below the deck. Because Tanzite STONEDECK structures have no gaps between stones, any moisture will run to the deck’s edge and fall off. Depending on the deck’s height and size, you may want to install an eavestrough or place rocks to act as a splash pad for the water.

Can Tanzite STONEDECKS be curved?

Answer

Yes. Because Tanzite STONEDECKS are made of smaller individual pieces, you can easily cut them to create the curve you want! You can even create custom designs or details in the centre of the structure by cutting the pieces that are within the perimeter.

Can Tanzite stones be glued?

Answer

We do not recommend gluing Tanizte stones. We tested numerous products and scenarios without success. Either the glue or the structure fails, creating a hazardous structure. Glueing Tanzite stones may void their warranty.

Can I paint or stain my Tanzite stones?

Answer

Yes. However, it will be extremely difficult and time-consuming to remove the paint or stain if you want to revert Tanzite stones to their original colour. Painting or staining will also change their texture, likely making them slippery when wet. We recommend sealing Tanzite stones every 10 years in a residential application. A penetrating sealer holds better and doesn’t change the look of the stones.

Question 33

Can I use non-recommended fasteners to install Tanzite bullnoses stones?

Answer

Only if they are the right size and made of stainless steel, coated fasteners will have the coating scraped off as they are installed and rust within a year or two from installation. Using non-recommended fasteners may void the warranty.

Is Tanzite STONEDECKS code-compliant?

Answer

Building codes vary from one municipality to another. You must always check your local building codes to ensure compliance. Tanzite STONEDECKS is fundamentally an exterior-grade tile system integrated with a waterproof decking system. If you consider both systems independently and build according to whichever one has the highest standard in your area, you should be ok. Make sure you contact your local municipality for more information. We are happy to provide you, or any municipality, with any necessary information.

Make sure there are no rotted or failing components.

Make sure the frame structure is about 5 to10 percent stronger than minimum standards.

Check the structure’s slope and clearance. The deck surface should have a slope of 1-2 percent away from the house. For clearance, make sure the additional thickness of materials doesn’t prevent any doors from opening or create a tripping hazard.

Ensure the additional height created by the thickness of the materials doesn’t create a tripping hazard or prevent doors from opening.

Answer

Yes. Tanzite STONEDECKS can resurface almost any structurally sound wood or concrete landing. The bullnose edge stones are the perfect size for steps. When resurfacing stairs, the riser height must remain the same between every surface that gets resurfaced. This usually means that the step nearest the ground’s height will have a greater rise than the rest unless the ground is resurfaced, regraded, or otherwise adjusted. Inversely, if there is a landing or deck at the top of the stairs that is not resurfaced the riser height between the top stair and the top landing/deck surface will decrease.

Can I use Tanzite decking materials directly on the ground?

Answer

Yes. Tanzite STONEDECKS can be installed directly on the ground. However, we recommend preparing a compacted granular base to install it over, similar to a paving stone patio.
Tanzite stones cannot be used on a driveway or other surface that will have a vehicle on it.

Can I use my existing railing when I resurface my deck with Tanzite STONEDECKS?

Answer

Yes. The existing railing can simply be removed and then reinstalled.

Can I install a railing on Tanzite STONEDECKS?

Fascia-mount railing prevents you from having to drill through the stones and the membrane but depending on the height of the deck; it may be more challenging to install.
Standard surface-mounted railing can be used but requires drilling through the perimeter stones and fastening to the deck structure underneath. Can I install Tanzite Stones on driveways?

Answer

Yes. As an accent detail embedded in a concrete driveway. As the driveway only if it is a concrete base, that is extremely even with no high or low spots that could cause the stones to rock or have a hollow base below them. Professional installation is recommended for surfacing a driveway.

What type of preparation is required to install Tanzite STONEDECKS directly on the ground?

Excavating out any topsoil plus any additional native earth to ensure a minimum depth of 6”.
Compacting the ground.
Installing road crush and compacting it to a total height of 4” to 4 ¼”.
Installing about 1” of crushed limestone to perfect the slope, and ensure proper drainage.

Can Tanzite stones be installed on existing deck boards instead of putting plywood down?

Answer

Yes. Tanzite stones can go directly over top of the existing deck boards. However, you should ensure there is some slope to the deck so that the water can drain off correctly. It would also be recommended to take a belt sander to the existing deck boards first to ensure they are fairly flat. Rather than using the EPDM membrane, use house wrap or landscaping fabric to ensure the deck boards can breathe and allow moisture to drain. When EPDM is used it will settle slightly into the gap between deck boards and trap water.

Can Tanzite Stones be applied, or re-surface to concrete?

Answer

Yes, Tanzite stone can be installed directly over top of concrete. Since it floats overtop your concrete does not even have to be in good condition, just structurally sound.

No. Tanzite stones can be used on a second storey deck, a balcony, a rooftop deck, or anywhere traditional decking is used.

How to clean Tanzite Stones?

Answer

Depending on what it is, there are different solutions. Most things can be cleaned by hosing it down, or with soap & water. If that doesn’t work, then a good heavy duty cleaner we suggest is “Spray & Forget” brand granite and natural stone cleaner. For bbq grease, or other grease, use a heavy duty engine degreaser. For a hazy appearance, clean it with a haze remover. For paint, use a paint thinner. Ultimately, you can even scrub it with a wire brush. Not too many decks can handle that! Note that since the tile finish is non-slip, this texture can make it a bit more effort to clean.
